PET EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
PLANNING TIPS
Whether it is dogs, cats, fish, birds or any other animal that you
love and live with, you need to have an evacuation plan that would
allow you to pack and leave quickly in case of an emergency. As a
member of the family, your pet(s) and their special needs should be
included in your emergency plan. Here are some recommendations:
You should have a way to transport your animals to your vehicle and
once inside, be able to secure them safely within the vehicle.
For small pets that need to be carried, a carrier with a shoulder
strap and/or a pet pack is essential.
A light weight wheeled cart would be helpful in the event that you
have to rely on traveling by foot with your family to help evacuate
you pet(s) and survival necessities.
A portable shelter can be used to secure your pet(s) safely and may
also have a calming effect in a stressful situation, especially if
your pet has used the shelter in your home prior to any emergency.
Plan for enough food, water and litter (if needed) for at least one
week per pet and include the following:
-
Medications
-
Copies of veterinary and vaccine records placed in a water proof bag
-
Portable dishes for food and water
-
Foldable litter pan, litter in water proof bags with small scoop
-
Micro fiber quick dry towels
-
Pads, hammocks and/or blankets
-
Toys
-
Don’t forget a picture of your pet in case they get separated from
you
